A simple Google search revealed that millions of people visit Kolkata every year just to get
a touch of the “old city living”. Yet, there are hardly any online guides, online city maps, or organized tours available in Kolkata. And, given Kolkata’s dense network of roads, horrible traffic and chaos it can be pretty daunting for tourists to go about the city. Being a Calcuttan myself who knows the city in and out, and sharing the frustration of my fellow tourists (as I am a perpetual tourist myself and have not been to Kolkata in years) I decide to write this blog. Hope this will prove to be worthwhile for some of you!
Few things that you must know about Kolkata: Kolkata is a pretty small city compared to Mumbai or Delhi, and you do not need more than three days to visit all the places of interest. However, Kolkata’s food (and I don’t just mean Bengali food) is undoubtedly the best in India, and just a food tour of Kolkata demands a much longer stay. Kolkata’s night life is pretty awesome and in fact the best in India according to many, so you definitely need to keep a night aside to experience that. Kolkata’s weather is pretty oppressive during the summers and the best time to visit the city is any time between October and February. And, if you visit Kolkata during Durga Puja (time varies, usually in October) you can also experience the maddening, somewhat disturbing yet astonishingly breathtaking and exuberant city life.
